What is coil steel? Characteristics, classification and applications of coil steel
Steel in general and coil steel in particular are one of the most important and widely used construction materials in the world. Currently, steel has many different applications in our daily lives, from building buildings, bridges and roads to manufacturing household appliances.
In the construction industry, “rolled steel” is the most widely used type. But basically there are many different types of rolled steel. To better understand the common types of rolled steel, as well as know what rolled steel is and what it is used for? Trung Dung Steel will help you have a more general view through the article below:
What is rolled steel?
Rolled steel is steel plates with smooth or ribbed surfaces, rolled together. Rolled steel is produced based on a complex refining process, requiring high technology and technique. Rolled steel is used as an input material to produce other types of steel: steel pipes, steel boxes, purlins, steel fences, … used in industrial construction, machinery manufacturing, tools, equipment, factory construction and many other uses.
The process of producing rolled steel is quite complicated and requires high technology. After the steel is refined, the raw material is cast into billets, then the billets continue to melt to form rolled steel products.
Characteristics and classification of rolled steel
Rolled steel is divided into 4 main types:
2.1) Hot rolled steel: This is a type of steel produced by the hot rolling process, in which steel plates are heated to very high temperatures (usually above 1,000 degrees Celsius) and then rolled into long and thin steel strips. Used to serve the automobile industry, railways, roofing industry, I-beam, H-beam steel beams, etc. Hot rolled steel is the raw material for the production of welded steel pipes, cast steel pipes. In addition, it is also the raw material for the production of cold rolled steel.
*Characteristics:
+ Surface: The surface of hot rolled steel often has a gray or black oxide scale layer, due to the rapid cooling process after rolling. This surface can be rough and uneven, not smooth.
+ Mechanical properties: Hot rolled steel coils have high ductility, are easy to bend, cut and process, have high durability, and can withstand large impacts.
+ Size and thickness: The hot rolling process makes the steel less precise in size and thickness than cold rolled steel coils.
Hot rolled steel coils can be produced in many different sizes and thicknesses. The usual thickness ranges from 1.6mm to 20mm, while the width can be up to 2000mm.
+ Lower cost: The production process is less complicated than cold rolled steel coils, so the cost is often cheaper
Hot rolled steel coils are an important product in the steel industry, playing an important role in many different fields thanks to their good mechanical properties and easy processing.
2.2) Cold rolled steel coil: Is a steel product manufactured by the cold rolling process, in which the steel coils that have undergone the hot rolling process are cooled and continued to be rolled at room temperature to create steel coils with higher thickness and precision dimensions. Used to create flat products such as steel plates, steel coils, thin flat steel plates…, round and square details, products with smooth surfaces…
*Characteristics:
+ Surface: The surface of cold rolled steel coils is often smooth, shiny and has a much higher finish than hot rolled steel coils. This is because the cold rolling process takes place at low temperatures, helping the steel surface to retain its shine and not be oxidized.
+ Mechanical properties: Cold rolled steel coils have higher tensile strength, hardness and durability than hot rolled steel coils. This makes it have good load-bearing capacity and less deformation when subjected to load.
+ Size and thickness: The thickness and size of cold rolled steel coils are very precise, suitable for applications that require high standards in size and shape. Cold rolled steel coils are usually thinner than hot rolled steel coils, ranging from 0.2mm to 3.5mm, with widths up to 1500mm. The thin thickness and smooth surface make cold rolled steel coils ideal for applications that require high precision.
+ Ductility and formability: The cold rolling process increases the hardness and strength of steel, helping the steel withstand greater impact forces. Cold rolled steel coils have good ductility, making them easy to process and shape into complex products without cracking or breaking.
Cold rolled steel coil is an important material in many industries, providing superior properties in terms of precision, durability and aesthetics, helping to meet the strict requirements of many different applications in social life.
2.3) Galvanized steel coil: Is a type of steel coil coated with a layer of zinc (aluminum-zinc alloy plating) to protect the steel from corrosion and rust. The galvanizing process helps prolong the life of the steel and makes it more durable in harsh environmental conditions.
Has a smooth surface, high corrosion resistance. This type of steel coil is widely used in structures, construction architecture, roofing panels, commercial advertising panels, handicrafts, corrugated roofing sheets or manufacturing industrial equipment, washing machines, refrigerators, televisions, air conditioners
*Characteristics:
+ High corrosion resistance: The zinc coating on the outside of the steel has very good corrosion resistance, helping to protect the steel inside from environmental impacts, including moisture, oxygen and other corrosive substances. This makes galvanized steel more durable when used outdoors or in humid environments.
+ Long life: Thanks to the zinc coating, the life of the steel is significantly extended. The zinc layer not only protects the steel surface but also protects scratches or damaged areas by creating a new protective layer when corroded.
+ Surface: Galvanized steel has a shiny, even-colored surface and is highly aesthetic for construction and decoration applications. The zinc coating on the surface also makes it easy to paint or add other protective layers to the steel.
+ Easy to process: Galvanized steel coil maintains the mechanical properties of the original steel, including tensile strength and ductility, making it easy to cut, bend, weld and process into different products without losing the protective properties of the zinc layer.
In short, galvanized steel coil is an important material in many industries, providing superior protection against corrosion, extending the life and maintaining the durability of steel products.
2.4) Stainless steel coil: This is a type of steel coil made from stainless steel, containing at least 10.5% chromium, which creates a protective oxide layer on the steel surface, preventing corrosion and rust. Used in construction architecture, in oxidizing environments such as shipbuilding industry, chemical industry, electrical industry, industrial medicine, boiler heat exchanger, machinery and equipment field, …
*Features:
+ Corrosion resistance: Stainless steel has a very high corrosion resistance due to the chromium content (at least 10.5%) in the composition. Chromium creates a thin protective oxide layer on the steel surface, preventing corrosion from the environment.
+ High heat resistance: Stainless steel coil has good heat resistance, maintaining strength and hardness at high temperatures. Some special stainless steels can withstand temperatures up to 1200°C, suitable for heat-resistant applications.
+ Aesthetics: Stainless steel has a shiny surface and is easy to maintain, making it suitable for applications that require high aesthetics. Stainless steel surfaces can be finished in many different ways such as polishing, scratching, or patterning.
+ High durability: Stainless steel coil has high tensile strength and hardness, suitable for applications that require mechanical strength. It also has good impact and abrasion resistance.
+ Ductility and ease of workability: Stainless steel has good ductility, can be easily bent, cut, welded and machined into complex shapes without losing the protective properties of the chromium oxide layer.
+ Resistance to contamination and hygiene: Stainless steel is not affected by many chemicals and is not easily contaminated, making it suitable for applications in the food, medical and pharmaceutical industries where high hygiene standards are required.
+ Wide range of applications: Stainless steel coil is used in many fields such as construction (railings, stairs, facades), food industry (food processing equipment, tanks), medical (surgical instruments, medical equipment), automotive (auto parts), and consumer goods (household appliances, kitchen equipment) …
+ Long service life: Thanks to its high resistance to corrosion and wear, stainless steel has a long service life and requires little maintenance, reducing maintenance and replacement costs in the long term. + Recyclability: Stainless steel is almost 100% recyclable, making it a sustainable and environmentally friendly choice.
Stainless steel coil is an important material with many outstanding advantages, meeting the needs of many different industries thanks to its durability, corrosion resistance and high aesthetics.
Applications of steel coils:
